CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Crash Landing!

“Do something!” Ben was awoken by Nora’s terrified shout. His eyes snapped open and he saw the tiny leprechaun struggling with the chair’s controls. They had flown for several hours and he had fallen asleep, lulled by the thrumming of the chair’s gently flapping wings.

Now fully awake, Ben hazarded a terrified glance at the rapidly ascending earth. “Oh no! Not again!”

Ben squeezed in beside Nora and tried to pull back on the control stick, but it didn’t budge. It had somehow become lodged forward in the down position and was forcing the chair into a steep dive.

“I don’t know what happened!” Nora exclaimed. “One minute we were going along fine, and then the stick suddenly threw itself forward!”

The unlucky chair continued its fall, and in spite of Ben’s heroic effort, no amount of tugging and straining would release the control stick. It’s the curse of number thirteen! he thought with alarm.

Ben’s life flashed in front of his eyes. Not now!We’ve got to find Thom!

Suddenly Nora shouted in Ben’s ear, pointing at an especially large green field at the edge of the woods. “Aim for that field!”

“Why?” Ben shouted back, wrestling with the controls.

“Just trust me! Do it!” she commanded. Ben responded by trying to edge the stick to the right. He pushed with all of his might and the chair slowly responded, still locked in its downward descent.

The dark green patch of field loomed closer, rushing into view with tremendous speed.

“Brace for impact!” Ben shouted as the chair rushed toward the earth. He shut his eyes and gripped the arms of the chair. This is really it! he thought as the ground rushed inevitably forward.

“FIVE . . . FOUR . . . THREE . . . TWO . . . !”

Ben was dimly aware of Nora’s shouts, counting down the seconds to impact.

Here it comes! he thought, his heart racing with terror.
